A construção da racionalidade ambiental no movimento agroecológico em Rio Branco Do Sul/PR. Organic Eprints
Padilha, Douglas Ochiai.

A new engineering method for understanding extrusion cooking process Organic Eprints
Cheng, Hongyuan; Friis, Alan.
A new engineering method is proposed to understand extrudate expansion and extrusion operation parameters for starch based food extrusion cooking process through dimensional analysis principle, i.e. Buckingham pi theorem. Three dimensionless groups, i.e. pump efficiency, water content and temperature, are suggested to describe the extrudate expansion. Using the three dimensionless groups, an equation is derived to express the extrudate expansion. The model has been used to correlate the experimental data for whole wheat flour and fish feed extrusion cooking. The average deviations of the correlation are respectively 5.9% and 9% for the whole wheat flour and the fish feed extrusion. An alternative 4-coefficient equation is also suggested from the 3...

A new tool to communicate multicriteria assessments in the organic value chain - an animated film Organic Eprints
Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Noe, Egon; Smith, Peter; Lykke-Olesen, Andreas; Fog, Erik.
Imagine there is a platform that makes it possible to discuss organics between all parties in the organic food chain based on their individual criteria. The MultiTrust project has endeavoured to find a tool to solve this challenge: How to make overall assessments of the effects of organic production in such a way that they actually can make a difference in practice. Organic products have to compete against conventional products, and often the organic have difficulties comparing when measured on single criteria. The hall mark of organics is the holistic approach, considering many issues at the same time, and therefore there is a need for overall assessments. Overall assessments can be very complex and therefore difficult to communicate. And it can be...

A Path of Actions to Develop Organics in the Finnish Food Chain Organic Eprints
Nuutila, Jaakko.
The Finnish Government has set development goals for organic food chain. Following the actions presented in this paper, it is possible to develop the organics in the Finnish food chain holistically and comprehensively to reach the goals. The increase in production and consumption will have proven positive impact to the wellbeing of people, nature and animals. Arctic and safety features of Finnish food will enhance the export possibilities of organic food to partly correct the current negative trade balance. The development is possible when organic values are incorporated to the Finnish food chain supported by the Nordic welfare model.

Hadjigeorgiou, Dr Ioannis; Xylouri, Prof Eftichia; Poulopoulou, Miss Ioanna; Frangiadaki, Miss Irene; Paparadi, Miss A; Patrikakis, Dr Charalampos; Sideridis, Prof Alexandros.
Organic Agriculture (OA) is a reply to Global Society‘s interest in food safety and enviromental conservation. Many European countries have significantly developed the OA sector, where Organic Animal Farming (OAF) systems hold a major part. Since, OA principles, methods and products are constantly evolving, an increasing number of agricultural agencies are using Web sites or portals to provide OA information to stakeholders. However, finding trustworthy information on OA is still time consuming, fragmented and associated with linguistic obstacles. This paper reports a new on-line service that provides (a) access to multilingual, specialized, updated and certified on-line information covering all OA plant and animal production aspects, (b) access to...

A Postcard from Korea: Worldʼs First Organic Agriculture Museum Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Korea has trumped the world in creating the world’s first organic farming museum. The Namyangju Organic Museum is a surprise - and for several reasons. Firstly, it is surprisingly good. And secondly, it is surely surprising that the world’s first organic agriculture museum appears in Korea? It is a specialist museum of which Namyangju can be justly proud. The museum caters for a variety of ages, from youngsters to oldsters, and for a variety of interests, from casual, to practical, to scholarly. Screen-based techno-interactive exhibits are an obvious hit with children. The Namyangju Organic Museum was launched to coincide with the 17th IFOAM Organic World Congress (September - October 2011), the first such event to be held in Asia. This museum can serve...

Achieving Social and Economic Development Through Ecological and Organic Agricultural Alternatives Organic Eprints
The third edition of the continental conference (3AOC) is holding in Nigeria October 5 – 9, 2015 with the theme “Achieving Social and Economic Development Through Ecological and Organic Agricultural Alternatives”. This conference is coming up in the continent when the call for need to improve rural livelihoods of Africans is becoming louder by the day. A veritable tool through which the livelihood of an average African can be improved is Organic Agriculture because it has an inherent potential to reduce production costs regularly incurred by small-medium scale farmers (principal actors in African agriculture), reduce debts, increase income, mitigate the vagaries of climate change, cope with market fluctuations, sustain soil fertility, minimize health...

Adoption and Abandonment of Organic Farming: An Emperical Investigation of the Irish Drystock Sector Organic Eprints
Läpple, Doris.
There is a considerable literature about the adoption of organic farming. However, possible abandonment of organic farming has received scant attention. Thus, relatively little is known about the exit decisions of farmers. In addition, most studies are based on a static framework where it is not possible to account for changes in farmer decisions over time. This article attempts to fill this gap in the literature by investigating the determinants that affect both adoption and abandonment of organic drystock farming over time. The use of duration analysis allows for the consideration of cross-sectional and time-varying factors over the study period from 1981 to 2008. Using this dynamic econometric framework revealed a significant time effect on...

Advisory services on organic farming using ICT’s in Bangladesh Organic Eprints
Uddin, Md. J.; Hossain, Shaikh Tanveer.
Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with more than 160 million people with a very small territory of 147,570 square kilometers (BBS, 2011). To ensure food production for the huge population, the term ‘green revolution’ was appeared in 1960s with the concept of ‘grow more food’. For this, introduction of High Yielding Varieties (HYV), as well as chemical fertilizers, pesticides and ground water extraction were undertaken. As a result, food self sufficiency have achieved within a very short time. At the same time, soil fertility as well as soil health maintenance totally been ignored. The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is increasing over the years in Bangladesh (Table 1). BARC (2001) showed that soil organic...

Agent Orange Day: Remediating chemical trespass Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Agent Orange Day, 10th August, is a day for us to remember the raison d'être of the organics movement. It was on this day, 51 years ago, that the USA embarked on the most audacious and extensive program of chemical warfare that the world has witnessed. Continuously, over a decade (1961-1971), vast swathes of Vietnam's forests, waterways, and croplands were drenched and re-drenched in high dosage agricultural herbicides, reportedly up to 50 times the recommended dosages. The US military intention was to denude the land of forests and crops, and, on these crude terms, it was a success. Estimates put the area of Vietnam affected at three million hectares (7.4 million acres). The objective was to deny cover and crops to ‘the enemy’. The Viet Cong were fighting...

Agro-designing: sustainability-driven, vision-oriented, problem preventing and knowledge-based methodology for improving farming systems sustainability Organic Eprints
Znaor, Darko; Goewie, Eric.
ABSTRACT While classical research focuses to problem solving, design is a problem- prevention methodology, and is suitable for multi- and and interdisciplinary research teams with the vision of how to improve the agricultural sustainability. Since organic agriculture is based on the holistic approach and is also problem-prevention oriented in that it refrains from certain inputs and practices, design is an interesting methodology that could be applied more often in organic agriculture. 1. Introduction, the need to redesign agricultural systems The demand for a more careful stewardship of a-biotic and biotic resources is central to the philosophy of sustainable development. A widely recognised concept, sustainable development is an essential element...

ALTERNTIVE PROTECTION OF BIOPOTATOES IN ORGANIC FARMING Organic Eprints
Tomasek, Jaroslav; Dvorak, Petr.
There were tested water extracts from Syringa vulgaris and Pyrethrum parthenium. They did not prove significant differences of decrease of the air attack of Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata), the activity of eggs – laying and the occurrence of larvae in comparison to the control. Interesting trends of lower-eggs lying and a lower larvae occurrence were discovered. The liquid spray against the late blight (Phytophthora infestans) did not significantly decrease neither occurrence of late blight or the yield. The production of the bio-potatoes is only 0,2 % of all potatoes production in the Czech Republic. The aim of this experiment was to try alternative methods of regulation of Colorado potato beetle and late blight (the biggest harmfull...
